Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness training
29 May 2026Cultural safety is an outcome of nursing and midwifery education that enables safe service to be defined by those that receive the service and is a way of providing care that is holistic, free of bias and racism, challenges belief based upon assumption and is done in a respectful manner.
Cultural awareness training will help build your knowledge and understanding to provide culturally appropriate and sensitive care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in your nursing and midwifery practice.
There are two programs the ANMF recommends for nurses and midwives.
Program 1 – Introduction to Aboriginal Cultural and Community Awareness by Walya Productions
This three-hour course is a great place to begin if cultural awareness training is new for you, and Walya has a special price for ANMF members.
Program 2 – Murra Mullangari: Introduction to Cultural Safety by CATSINaM
This course is more in depth and developed by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander nurses for practicing nurses and midwives.
The newer version of this program launched in June 2025 with the added focus on practical application of cultural safety in clinical contexts.
Both courses are provided by Supply Nation endorsed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations.
